George Shimizu Discusses CALF-20 and the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry
In a CBC Calgary Eyeopener interview following the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry announcement, Professor George Shimizu discussed metal-organic frameworks and the contribution of his research group at the University of Calgary.
The prize recognized Susumu Kitagawa, Omar Yaghi and Richard Robson for developing metal-organic frameworks. CALF-20, developed by the Shimizu group, featured in the accompanying Nobel materials as an example of their application to carbon capture.
Shimizu explained how CALF-20’s selective adsorption of carbon dioxide and durability helped advance the material from laboratory research toward industrial demonstrations.
